Majority of the world right now are against fossil fuels as they are unsustainable and has a negative effect on the environment. These people are led by organizations such as Environment and Energy Study Institute, Greenpeace Canada, Go Fossil Free Organization, and The International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association. Activist such as David Suzuki are also fighting for a world without fossil fuels.
Campaigns, protests and online activism have been occurring to convince the world to reduce or even end the use of fossil fuels. |
Why are people and organizations against fossil fuels?
Environmental Hazards Environmental pollution is one of the major disadvantage of fossil fuels. It is a known fact that carbon dioxide, gas released when fossil fuels are burnt, is one of the primary gas responsible for global warming. Rise in temperature of earth has resulted in melting of polar ice caps, flooding of low lying areas and rise in sea levels. If such conditions continue, our plant Earth might face some serious consequences in near future.
Impact on Aquatic Life by Oil SpillHuge tankers carrying oil from one place to another – at great cost and great risk – can sometimes crash or run aground and spill the content into the sea and on the nearby coast. This is disastrous not only for the sea and land but for the animals that live off of it. Birds can get coated in the oil and be unable to fly, fish can choke and other animals, such as seals or penguins, can ingest this deadly fuel when they try to clean it off themselves.

Non-RenewableAs of today, fossil fuels are being extracted at an exorbitant rate to meet the gap between demand and supply and it is estimated that they will be finished in next 30-40 years. It would take millions of years to replace coal, and oil, and this means that we will not be able drive cars anymore unless we switch to electric cars that use energy from renewable energy sources.
Coal Mining Extraction of coal from areas that have huge reserves is not only a difficult and dangerous task but also poses a serious health hazard to the lives of several workers who work there. The coal mining destroys wide areas of land and results in the loss of ecosystems
